Who is Sanjoy Roy, the Kolkata rape and murder case accused
Sanjoy Roy, the prime accused in the rape and murder case of a trainee doctor at a state-run Kolkata hospital, had a history of violence against women, multiple reports suggest.
The 33-year-old allegedly raped and murdered a second-year trainee doctor. CCTV footage shows Roy entering the emergency building of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital at 4 am on the day of the incident. He was wearing a Bluetooth device around his neck.
However, 40 minutes later, when he left the building, the earphone was missing. Investigators discovered the device near the victim’s body and found it was paired with Roy’s cellphone, which linked him to the crime.
The post-mortem report has confirmed that the 31-year-old trainee doctor was sexually assaulted and murdered. The report found multiple injuries on her body and signs of struggle, including blood stains on the victim’s body, scratch marks and a broken collarbone.
Who is Sanjoy Roy?
Sanjoy Roy, who was arrested on August 10, is currently under 14-day judicial custody. He has worked as a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police’s Disaster Management Group since 2019, as per an NDTV report.
He was later transferred to the Police Welfare Cell and assigned to the police outpost at the hospital, granting him access to all departments within the facility.
Sources revealed the 33-year-old would often masquerade as an officer, wearing a Kolkata Police T-shirt, using his connections to stay in barracks. He was allegedly involved in a racket within the hospital, taking bribes and extorting money from patients’ relatives by promising to secure them a bed.
Investigations by the Kolkata police have revealed that Roy’s mobile phone contained several “disturbing and violent” pornographic clips. He also reportedly confessed to the crime with no remorse and told the police, “If you want, you can hang me,” as per local media reports.
Sanjoy Roy’s neighbours have come forward with disturbing details about his personal life. They alleged he had married multiple times, with three of his wives leaving him due to his abusive nature. His fourth wife reportedly died of cancer last year.
The ones who knew Roy described him as a habitual offender, with a pattern of violence against women. His neighbours claimed that he would often return home late at night, allegedly in a drunken state.
However, Sanjoy Roy’s mother has come forward to defend her son, claiming he was innocent and framed for the crime. She alleged that Roy was forced to confess under police pressure. “My son is innocent. He has confessed to the crime under the pressure of police,” she told India Today.
Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee assured of swift action in the case. She announced that if the police failed to solve the case by Sunday, the investigation would be handed to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
