Kane Williamson received a standing ovation for his 100th Test, but Josh Hazlewood’s excellent delivery diminished the party for him.
It was a significant moment for the New Zealand cricket team as Kane Williamson and Tim Southee played their 100th Test match, stepping onto the field with their children before the start of the first session.
The Black Caps are currently touring Australia for a two-match Test series, with the second match set to begin in Christchurch on Friday.
Both stalwarts took the field with their children. Meanwhile, the crowd at Hagley Oval applauded as Williamson, despite the cheers, couldn’t live up to expectations. The batsman, scoring just 17 runs off 37 balls, fell victim to a splendid delivery by Josh Hazlewood, playing on the wrong line, leading to an LBW decision by the umpire.
Three batsmen conducted a review, but UltraEdge confirmed that there was no bat involved, and ball tracking displayed three reds as the domestic team was dismissed for 84/5.
Hazlewood was in fantastic form, dismissing Tom Latham (38), Williamson, Rachin Ravindra (4), Daryl Mitchell (4), and Matt Henry (29), restricting New Zealand to 162 runs. Mitchell Starc was also in good form, taking three wickets. Meanwhile, Saudi showcased excellent batting in his 100th Test, forming a 56-run partnership with Henry for the ninth wicket, the highest collaboration of the innings.
Since making his Test debut in November 2010, Williamson has amassed 8692 runs in 100 matches with a highest score of 251. Throughout his illustrious Test career, he has compiled 32 centuries, six double centuries, and 33 half-centuries. He stands as New Zealand’s all-time leading run-scorer in Tests and captained the team to victory in the 2021 ICC World Test Championship final.
During this period, Southee made his Test debut in March 2008, and this fast bowler has taken 378 wickets in 100 Test matches, including 15 instances of five-wicket hauls and 10-wicket hauls.
