Due to the unavailability of a wheelchair at the Mumbai Airport, an 80-year-old Air India passenger, who walked 1 km, suffered a cardiac arrest, leading to death.
A senior citizen, who had requested wheelchair assistance on an Air India flight from New York to Mumbai, passed away due to a heart attack.
The incident occurred on February 12 when the passenger, accompanied by his seated wife in a wheelchair, was proceeding through immigration.
According to media reports, the couple had booked a wheelchair in advance, but only the wife was provided with one. As the man was walking with his wife, he collapsed at the immigration counter due to a heart attack.
Unfortunately, on February 12, 2024, during their journey from New York to Mumbai, our visitor, using a wheelchair alongside his wife, fell ill at the immigration counter.We suggested waiting for wheelchair assistance due to high demand, but instead, they opted to proceed with walking alongside their life partner.Following the doctor’s advice at the airport after falling ill, the passenger was immediately taken to the hospital, where their demise was pronounced, as stated by an Air India spokesperson.
The deceased has been identified as a holder of an American passport of Indian origin, traveling from New York to Mumbai on Air India flight AI-116 in the economy class.
The flight was supposed to land in Mumbai at 11:30 AM, but reportedly, it got delayed, and the landing occurred at 2:10 PM. In the early days of February this year, a woman sitting in a wheelchair was asked to stand by airport staff in Kolkata. This incident took place during security clearance at the airport.
